SBC FAQ

What is a School-Based Health Clinic?

A School-Based Health Clinic (SBHC), also referred to as an SBC, is a regular medical clinic located on a school campus. Each one is staffed with a receptionist, a nurse (LPN), and a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or physician. SBCs provide the exact same medical services as our regular clinics.

The purpose of an SBC is to maximize learning, instruction time, and productivity for everyone involved. Not only that, but parents/guardians don’t have to leave work, pick up the student from school, drive to the doctor, wait to be seen, drop the student off at school, and then drive back to work. Taking advantage of the school clinic saves parents valuable leave time, which can be better spent on even more valuable family time later on.

Who will be caring for patients?

Each SBC is staffed with a receptionist, a nurse (LPN), and a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or physician.

Am I required to register my child for School Based Health Clinic services?

Not at all. If you choose not to register your student, they can always see the school nurse.

What happens if my child needs treatment other than what the school nurse can provide and I have not signed the SBC consent?

Option 1
Preregister online by submitting basic information. Then, clinic staff will enter that information into our system and you’ll get a link (via text message) with instructions on how to finish the registration process. All paperwork and consents will be completed and signed using your mobile device.

Option 2
The child can be picked up and taken to the provider of your choice, like their pediatrician.

If I sign the consent, will I still be able to take my child to their regular pediatrician/provider?

Absolutely! The school clinic is not meant to replace pediatricians or other primary care providers, but instead work with their usual provider by offering supplemental care.

May I be present at my child’s SBHC visit?

Parents/Guardians are always welcome to accompany the student to their visit. Simply inform the nurse or receptionist that you want to be present. When you arrive on campus, be sure to check-in at the school office before proceeding to the clinic.

How will you communicate with me?

Every effort will be made to contact you - usually by phone call, so please be sure to provide us with your most current contact number.

Another useful method is the Patient Portal, where you can:

  • view lab results

  • securely communicate with clinic staff

  • receive the Patient Care Summary*

  • view/pay your bill

  • view/update insurance & contact info

  • and more**

*The Patient Care Summary is a document that includes: the day/time of visit, reason for visit, vital signs (height, weight, temp, BP, & pain scale), active problems, allergies, medication list (including meds prescribed at the current visit), current diagnosis, procedures, treatment plan, and other valuable info.

How do I register for the Patient Portal?

An email address is required to register for all online services. If you are a parent/guardian and you want online access to your child’s health record, simply give us your email address and we will register you as an authorized family member in your child’s account.

Will I be charged for my child’s visit?

No money will be collected from students, but we will bill the insurance on file, so please make sure you have provided us with your child’s most current insurance information.

If you are without insurance, our staff can assist in applying for Medicaid or the Access Assistance Program (Sliding Fee).

When applying for our assistance program, you may be required to provide:

  • proof showing where you applied for Medicaid, or

  • proof of Medicaid denial

In any case, no student will ever be denied access to the school nurse.

Are faculty & staff charged for their visit?

Faculty & staff will pay their co-payment, co-insurance, and/or deductible at the visit - just as you would at a regular clinic.

What’s the best insurance options for my child?

Look here for information about student insurance plans and to compare the benefits they offer.
